Synthetic solutions offer range of benefits July 01st 2010 Two fully synthetic refrigeration oils have been developed by Batoyle Freedom Group for Comparts International specifically for the lubrication of compressors running on HFC coolants of the R134A type.
Comparts International manufactures and supplies parts for a wide range of refrigeration compressors. Identifying a need in its business to supply synthetic refrigeration oils with a high level of refrigerant compatibility, the company approached long-standing industrial lubricant supplier Batoyle Freedom Group to discuss development opportunities.
Batoyle is one of the UK’s largest independent lubricant manufacturing companies and has a dedicated team of in-house chemists working on new product developments. As such, it was able to offer Comparts the specialised service of collaboratively developing lubricants to meet its specific requirements.
Having been extensively field tested, they have already displayed a number of benefits to the end user. In addition to being totally miscible with R134A over the full operating temperature range, they do not exhibit the waxing associated with some mineral oil based formulations. In combination, this leads to a reduced risk of blockages and sludge formation and hence improved heat transfer characteristics.
A longer service interval is also said to be possible with these oils. Being fully synthetic they exhibit excellent thermal stability, reducing thermal degradation and oxidation of the lubricant – prime considerations when determining useful service life of the lubricant.
Batoyle comments that the low temperature fluidity compared to conventional fluids is also a major advantage. Pour point and low temperature viscosity is reduced, ensuring greater pumpability and cooling/heat transfer characteristics. The inherently high viscosity index not only provides better low temperature characteristics but also ensures viscosity and film strength is maintained at high operating temperatures. This ensures improved energy efficiency and better lubricity; with subsequent advantages in terms of machine downtime and longevity, particularly when compared to some standard mineral oil based products. Djamel Kechacha, managing director of Comparts International, says:
“Batoyle had the technical expertise we needed to bring this product to market. The collaborative process in developing this new product with Batoyle was smooth, informative and enjoyable.” More articles from HPC Compressed Air Systems: |
