Maintenance short cuts? Do not be tempted
August 10th 2009

Efficient filtration helps ensure peak performance of a compressor system and prevents oil, vapour and particulate from degrading equipment. While compressor maintenance itself is an integral part of most businesses programmes, an often forgotten part of that maintenance is regular filter element replacement.Walker Filtration explains

Maintenance is a key issue that should be at the forefront of business focus. However, with many businesses feeling the pinch in today’s current economic climate it may be tempting to cut maintenance corners. This is a false economy that should be avoided at all costs.

The importance of a well maintained compressor system should not be ignored. A well maintained system is both an efficient and cost effective one. But, in order to benefit from an efficient and cost effective compressed air system, businesses need to turn their attention to applying stringent maintenance procedures and ensure they are followed correctly. It is important for businesses to remember that a well planned maintenance schedule – far from costing money – will in fact enable savings to be made in energy costs and will also reduce the costs associated with the repair of broken equipment and production downtime.

The importance of regularly changing filter elements cannot be underestimated. Repeated exposure to oil, vapour and particulate matter can over time cause filter elements to become clogged creating an increased pressure drop across the filter and restricted air flow into the compressor system. This means that more energy is needed in order for the compressor to perform to a satisfactory level. This increase in energy means increased energy costs for the user, something that businesses are keen to avoid in today’s current economic climate. Few people may be aware that every 1 barg pressure drop within a compressor system equates to a 7% increase in compressor energy costs. This is something that can be avoided with a simple filter element change.

Lianne Walker, director, group general manager of filtration specialist Walker Filtration is flying the flag for regular compressor system maintenance.

“Many businesses underestimate the importance of maintenance. For a number, it’s a case of if it’s not broken don’t fix it. This is the wrong attitude to have. Regular maintenance of compressor systems, in particular filter element replacement, not only enables the compressor system to perform to its full capability but it also saves valuable money on businesses energy bills. In today’s budget conscious business community, this is a must.”

Walker Filtration recommends that filter elements are changed at least every twelve months and every six months for Activated Carbon filter elements for peak filtration performance.
