Internet-based monitoring
July 26th 2007

All hardware within a compressor room can be monitored via the internet with Atlas Copco’s AirConnect software allowing effective servicing and maintenance, says Kevin Prince of Atlas Copco

AirConnect is an aftermarket service that links compressed air systems to an automated 24/7 Internet-based monitoring system. AirConnect provides increased availability and reliability of operators' compressed air systems; allowing service optimisation.

AirConnect features:

• Round-the-clock monitoring

• Data available online, including SPM (shock pulse monitoring) that determines bearing wear as the basis for efficient condition monitoring

• Automatic warning notifications via e-mail.

• Remote diagnosis

• Efficient service scheduling – interventions based on requirements

• Online reports

• Maintenance included

Upgradeable to an Energy Contract – a procedure that conducts a full site assessment and undertakes to reduce overall energy consumption to an agreed target level The hardware monitors all devices in the compressor room and gives access to the Internet. AirConnect software includes a configuration program for compressor room layout and measurement points during commissioning and it also provides approved access group certificates. The program allows the engineer to set up the compressor house screen so that the data graphics accurately mimic the actual plant layout to assist identification of measurement points.

With this visualisation solution, all information from installation status to trends and system performance are displayed in a simple, easy-to-understand pictorial way with flow paths and diagrams on a desk top screen.

Because of the basic operation and communication by SMS/Internet notification, maintenance engineers are presented with performance data that allows them to decide whether or not a service visit is required. In much the same way that road vehicle servicing schedules are interdependent upon time/mileage actual data, there is a compressor ‘heartbeat’ function of real-time notification. It informs the service supplier when it is appropriate to perform maintenance procedure within the scheduled programme.

Added value for AirConnect customers comes in the form of increased availability and reliability of the compressed air system plus free software and hardware updates, and extended service intervals. Detailed reports show consumed energy, delivered volume, air pressure, system availability and events.

For customers’ added value, AIROptimizer provides hardware and software for total energy optimisation yet requires minimal investment costs for continual savings. The agreement includes hardware and software, all maintenance costs, and an annual AIRScan (compressed air audit system).

An initial audit is performed to determine the potential savings that can be achieved on the operator’s system and, as a result, many operators find that their savings exceed their previous maintenance costs.

The hardware, software and systems for all of these aftermarket products and services come with options for operators to buy or lease.
