Reduce Costs and Increase Reliability
July 01st 2005

With Testo’s monitoring facility for compressed air applications Compressed air is one of the most expensive forms of energy supply for industrial applications. Not only because of the excessive installation costs for compressors, dryers and pipe work but also due to high operating and maintenance costs. The challenge of reducing operating costs is therefore an important but challenging area.

In addition, service managers must be aware of corrosion, leaks, blocked outlets and ice build up, all of which could cause breakdowns and the costs associated with repair and system downtime.

The testo 6740 pressure dew point transmitter enables you to reduce your operating costs and at the same time helps to protect your compressed air system from moisture damage, therefore reducing maintenance costs.

REDUCING OPERATING COSTS Compressors and dryers are often very power hungry. Although most compressors and dryers are able to run in partial mode this option is often not used as a suitable control facility is missing and the dryers are therefore time controlled.

Running a dryer based on time control can mean that drying phases are longer than they need be which results in excessive operating costs.

In order to switch to running dryers on demand, service engineers need an accurate and reliable method of continuously monitoring the humidity level in compressed air. An output transmitter such as the testo 6740 at the dryer outlet can be used to control the operation of the dryer or could be used to control the valves of an adsorption dryer if the humidity level is low enough, ensuring high quality air and preventing moisture damage to the system. Using this method, energy cost savings of up to £1000 per year per dryer are possible. This means that the testo 6740 would pay for itself in just a few months.

MANAGING MAINTENANCE COSTS Monitoring instruments like the testo 6740 can also help to increase the lifetime of compressed air installations and reduce the costs associated with servicing and spare parts. Furthermore the costs associated with system downtime and waste from poor quality product are also reduced.

0805 The example shows a time controlled adsorption dryer.

Humid compressed air is dried in vessel A while the adsorption granulate is regenerating in vessel B using 15% of the dried air from vessel A. After a defined time period (e.g. 1 hour) the system switches over and vessel B is now the active (blue) drying vessel whilst A is regenerating.

But the regeneration process (red) is shorter (depending on seasons and surrounding conditions) than the defined switching period. The regeneration process can be stopped when the air on the outlet of the regeneration vessel is dry enough by closing the supply valve. The additional 15% can be used for the process or the compressor level can be reduced to 85% which saves energy costs.
